Arizona Archery Club's Help

by Barbara Allan

Author of The book, Conquering Arthritis

One of the steps to healing from arthritis (actually from anything) is expressing heartfelt graditude.  Health isn't just lack of illness, it is living with joy and connection.  Expressing graditude is important because it helps foster these qualities.

With that in mind, I will now model expressing graditude.

I love the Hunger Game trilogy books by Susanne Collins.  The heroine Katniss Everdeen has much to teach about prevailing over any difficult situtation, including arthritis.

Inspired, I decided to shoot a video showing how using a effective tool (like Katniss's bow and arrows) for healing arthritis was much better than using a rather small and ineffective tool (like a children's play toy bow and arrow set) which I consider to be like a using drugs only.

Carmen Gunn, archery coach extradinaire at Arizona Archery Club with Barbara Allan, trainee

The problem was I hadn't shot a bow in about 40 years.  The solution was The Arizona Archery Club (1115 W Deer Valley Road, Suite 1, Phoenix, AZ 85027, 623-266-4647).  Owner Kenny Cuchiara set me up with a coach, Carmen Gunn.  Carmen is such an amazing coach that in only one lesson I had good enough form to move on to the filming.  Owner Kenny Cuchiara then graciously allowed me to use his amazing indoor archery range to shoot video footage and Carmen continued to expertly coach me during the filming.  Carmen's husband Dave, also helped out with some good camera ideas.

If you have any desire to shoot with a bow and you live in the Greater Phoenix area, I highly recommend this store and this range.  The staff is great, the facility is great, and it is tremendous amount of fun to shoot there.  I was especially impressed by all the young people who were there for a class or there to shoot  accompanied by a parent.  Everyone one looked to be having fun.  Seldom have I been around so many smiling, genuinely happy people.

Here is video I was able to make with Kenny, Carmen and Dave's help:
